The Northern Ireland Wrestling Association (NIWA) governs the sport of Olympic Freestyle Wrestling within Northern Ireland.
The association\'s role is to promote and develop Olympic Freestyle Wrestling, to encourage maximum participation and proficiency and with the development of coaches, officials, and administrators; the association demonstrates leadership to the sport of wrestling in Northern Ireland.
Freestyle wrestling is similar to American collegiate style, or folkstyle wrestling. Holds are relatively unlimited, provided they are not dangerous, and can be applied to any part of the body.
It is probably the best sport for overall physical development as it involves all the muscle groups and during training, a wrestler works on constantly improving their strength, flexibility, stamina, balance, speed and technique; what they learn on the mat is transferable to real life experiences, they are self reliant, mentally and physically fit, self disciplined, competitive and responsible.
There are no barriers in the sport of Olympic Freestyle Wrestling, it is open to everyone, male, female, juniors and seniors.
