Commonwealth Council Select Support Team for Delhi Games
The Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council has selected three members of their support team ahead of the Games which take place from 3-14 October in Delhi, India. This will be the first time India has hosted the Games and only the second time the event has been held in Asia (Kuala Lumpur in 1998 was the first). The medical team has been named as Dr. Barbara Fair and Dr. Philip Glasgow while the Press Officer has been named as Clare McCoy.
Dr Barbara Fair is a Senior GP Partner in the University Health Centre at Queens. She was team doctor on the successful Northern Ireland Commonwealth Youth Games team to Pune in 2008 and has attended the World Student Games as team doctor.
Dr. Philip Glasgow is head of Sports Medicine at the Sports Institute Northern Ireland. He has worked as a physiotherapist in the NHS, as a researcher at the University of Ulster and for the past number of years within high performance sport managing elite athletes during training and competition from across a wide range of sports including rugby union, hockey, athletics, boxing, skiing, sailing, cycling, swimming, squash and football.
Phil has worked at a number of major international competitions including various World and European Championships as well as working as a HQ physiotherapist for the Irish team at the Beijing Olympic Games.
Clare McCoy is the Marketing & Communications Manager with Athletics Northern Ireland for the last 3 years. Her main duties and responsibilities are to provide a comprehensive service in the fields of marketing, public relations and press along with maintaining their successful website.
Clare was the Marketing & Website manager for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships that took place on 13th December 2009 in Dublin, hosted by Athletics Ireland. This was one of the most prestigious sporting events to be held in the country over the last number of years. She has just been shortlisted as Young Marketer of the Year in the 2010 CIM Marketing Awards.
It is no surprise that team management remains as it was for the Commonwealth Youth Games where Northern Ireland secured 9 medals from 19 competitors. Chef de Mission Robert McVeigh will be supported by Terry Crothers, Alison Moffitt and Stewart Tosh.
Talking about his country's chances at the 2010 Games, McVeigh said they want to do better than the 2006 Games, where they won two silver medals. We will have more than 70 athletes making a team exceeding 100 in number and will look to return better off than we did from Melbourne. One reason is that the timing of the Games suits us, coming as it does towards the end of our summer season, he added.
