Northern Ireland Nine Medal Haul
The Northern Ireland Team of athletes, coaches and officials returned to the George Best International Airport on Sunday 19th October from what was a very successful Commonwealth Youth Games for the teenagers. The 19 young athletes did Northern Ireland proud as they brought home a total of nine medals from the Games that were hosted by the City of Pune in India.
Successful athletes were:
Matthew Hall-Shooting-Silver
Ciara Mageean-Athletics-Bronze
Hannah Lewis-Athletics-Silver
Edward Moubrey-Athletics-Bronze
Sean Duffy-Boxing-Silver
Paul Hyland-Boxing-Bronze
Chelsey Wilson-Swimming-SilverandBronze
Conor Leaney-Swimming-Bronze
Just missing out on the medals were a number of our other athletes, for example Curtis Woods came agonisingly close to a medal in the 400m loosing out by 1/100th second behind England's Jordan McGrath and it was reassuring that many were able to acheive Personal Bests at the Games which in itself is an acheivement which any athlete can be proud of.
The Youth Games certainly were a big success for the Northern Ireland Team and thanks go to all those coaches and officials who put in the many hours of hard work making preparations for the delegation travelling out to India. Thank you to all the sponsors including Kukri, Saucony and Asda who also had a role to play in the preparation of th team. Finally a huge congratulations to all the athletes on your successes, and good luck to you all as you continue on your sporting careers!
