More Medals for Northern Ireland
On Tuesday Matthew Hall won Silver in Free Rifle 60 Prone competition with a total score of 683 just three points behind the gold medalist James Huckle of England. Matthew is due to be in action again in the Free Rifle 3x40 Prone event.
Commenting on the success Chairman of the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council said "all the athletes have put in a great deal of effort into their preparations for this event as have the coaching staff and many officials working behind the scenes for the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council, and I am glad to see that our young athletes are performing to their potential with several personal bests and of course a Silver Medal notched up already."
Today the Northern Ireland young hopefuls managed to add to the over all medal haul, the day started very promisingly with Curtis Woods finishing just outside of the medals in the 400m and then Hannah Lewis magnificantly secured the Silver medal in the long jump event. Also on the track Ciara Mageean claimed bronze in the 1500m with a time of 4.22.53 and Edward Moubrey jumped 4m 70 in the pole vault again to earn bronze.
However, these were not the only successes of the day, in the pool Micheal Dawson and Conor Leaney both finished 4th in the 50m Breaststroke and the 200m freestyle respectively. Swimming coach Nelson Lindsay commented; "I am delighted on the performances by the two boys and they will greatly benefit form the experience, we are looking forward to a great swim by Chelsey later."
Indeed in her race later on in the day, Enniskillen girl, Chelsey Wilson delivered a fantastic performance to claim bronze in the women's 100m backstroke final setting a personal best of 1min 04.20 seconds.
This means that Northern Ireland have won a total of five medals so far, and we wish them the best of luck in their fight for some more, and all eyes will turn to medalist Matthew Hall who will be in action again, boxers Sean Duffy and Paul Hyland who are through to their respective weight semi-finals and Ciara Mageean will be competing in the 800m event.
Please leave messages of good luck for the athletes on our message board.
