A successful Day for Northern Ireland
It was a very good day all round yesterday for Northern Ireland at the Comonwealth Youth Games in Pune India, Ciara Mageean finished 2nd in her 1500m heats with a time of 4.25.18 and has made it through to the 1500m final. Curtis Woods from Carrickfergus also finished 2nd in the semi-finals of the 400m running a personal best of 48.05 which is also an Ireland U20 record, but importantly qualifying for a slot in the final. Hannah Lewis jumped a Personal best in the Long Jump of 5.98m and qualified easily for the long jump finals. All of the Northern Ireland boxers have qualified for the quarter-finals of their competitions and all our swimmers are through to their respective finals also, but the hero of the day is undoubtedly Matthew Hall who won Silver in Free Rifle 60 Prone competition earlier today with a total score of 683 just three points behind the gold medalist James Huckle of England. Matthew is due to be in action again in the Free Rifle 3x40 Prone event later in the week.
Commenting on the success Chairman of the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council said "all the athletes have put in a great deal of effort into their preparations for this event as have the coaching staff and many officials working behind the scenes for the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council, and I am glad to see that our young athletes are performing to their potential with several personal bests and of course a Silver Medal notched up already."
